At least the Brunswick County Commissioners admit they have an image problem. Unfortunately, the solution proposed at their Tuesday meeting makes them look more like mercenaries than public servants.
One commissioner’s defense of the system, which pays commissioners $50 for every “meeting” they attend in addition to their annual stipend, didn’t do much do dispel that READ MORE

  • This week's Short Takes Question
ew Hanover County’s proposal to merge volunteer fire departments under the control of the county-run fire service is controversial, because some people think it will reduce the importance of volunteers. What’s your take? Is Southeastern North Carolina getting too big not to have salaried firefighters? What role should the volunteers play in a merged service?

  • Changes to how you send letters
For the past few months some of you may have been somewhat confused by our log-in requirement for submitting letters to the editor electronically. I'm happy to say that we have taken steps that we hope will make the process a little smoother.
  • Guidelines
Please address comments to the editor or to the readers rather than to a third party. Letters that contain libel, gratuitous profanity, racist remarks or personal insults, which assert unsubstantiated facts, which are copied from another source, or which are just plain ugly will not be published. Please be respectful of others' right to an opinion. No more than two letters per month, please. A maximum of one letter per month will be published in the print edition.
  • Required Information
Please include your full name, home address and a valid telephone number and e-mail address with any submissions in the boxes provided -- no need to repeat that information in the body of your letter; the system automatically places only your name and community of residence at the end. If you include personal information in the body of your letter, it may show up online.
  • Attention
You must log in or create an account. This process is necessary because of an excess of spam invading the system. You will not be able to send a letter without logging in. You are logged in if the upper right corner gives you the option to "log out." We recommend staying logged in as a convenience, but remember your password! Also, because the site is frequently updated, we advise you to compose your letter using your word processing software and paste the letter into the box provided. This will prevent letters from disappearing in midsentence.
