Throughout its evolution, the museum has objectively interpreted and presented the achievements and aspirations of African Americans from pre-colonial times to the current day. The museum is committed to telling the story of African Americans in all its permutations: family life, the Civil Rights movement, arts and entertainment, sports, medicine, architecture, politics, religion, law and technology. The AAMP currently houses four galleries and an auditorium, each of which offer exhibitions anchored by one of our three dominant themes: the African Diaspora, the Philadelphia Story, and the Contemporary Narrative. • Venue: American Swedish Historical Museum http://events.starnewsonline.com/philadelphia-pa/venues/show/40722-american-swedish-historical-museum The American Swedish Historical Museum in South Philadelphia is the oldest Swedish Museum in the United States. Founded in 1926, the Museum has been dedicated to preserving and promoting Swedish and Swedish-American cultural heritage and traditions for nearly 80 years. The Museum is a place where Swedes, Swedish-Americans, and people of all nationalities who appreciate Swedish contributions to history, art, architecture, music, science and technology can come together. The beautiful Museum building was designed by the Swedish-American architect John Nyden. The inspiration came from Eriksberg Slott, a 17th-century mansion in Sweden, and Mount Vernon, George Washington's home in Virginia. On June 2, 1926, Sweden's Crown Prince Gustav Adolf placed the Museum's cornerstone. By October the following year the construction was nearly finished. Venue: American Swedish Historical Museum
  • Venue: Arboretum of the Barnes Foundation http://events.starnewsonline.com/lower-merion-pa/venues/show/1137289-arboretum-of-the-barnes-foundation Captain Joseph Lapsley Wilson once owned the land on which the Gallery and the Arboretum of the Barnes Foundation are situated. He began planting a number of trees as early as the 1880s. When Dr. and Laura Barnes purchased the property in 1922, they agreed to preserve Wilson's plantings, which became the nucleus of the Arboretum. Laura Barnes, with the support of Dr. Barnes and Dr. John Fogg, carefully enhanced the living collections to over 3,000 species/varieties of woody plants gathered from different sources around the world. The diversity of species and varieties growing in such a modest area is one of the most noteworthy features of the Arboretum. Venue: Arboretum of the Barnes Foundation

  • Venue: DaVinci Art Alliance http://events.starnewsonline.com/philadelphia-pa/venues/show/49337-davinci-art-alliance New Work By Carla Lombardi & Brigitte Rutenberg FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NEW WORK Brigitte Rutenberg and Carla Lombardi at the DaVinci Art Alliance at 704 Catharine Street in Philadelphia, PA 19147, across from the Fleisher Art Memorial. Tel. Lombardi 610 459-4190, Rutenberg 215 551-0551 Exhibition Dates: Sept. 1-26, 2010 Opening Reception: Fri. Sept.3, 4-7 pm (Labor Day week-end) Meet the Artists: Sun. Sept. 19, 2-6 pm Gallery hours.: We-Fri 4-7 pm and Sat./Su 2-6 pm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ BRIGITTE RUTENBERG and CARLA LOMBARDI are both of European background who received their art education amongst others at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts as well as Tyler School of Art. They will be exhibiting their two and three-dimensional works in September at the Da Vinci Art Alliance. LOMBARDI will be showing two and three-dimensional work in clay while RUTENBERG's works consist mainly of drawings on paper and glass. Brigitte Rutenberg has been working on paper for the past decade, using a wide variety of materials to work on and with. In this exhibit she limits herself to ink drawings done on vellum paper, mylar and glass, the latter in three dimensional form. She describes her works as paper quilts, alluding to recycled materials with which to make something new. She chooses subjects that relate to objects women use, or have used, in daily life. "My quilts are done in a two-fold process: I draw a series of stamp-size tabs of paper and when there are a dozen or so I begin to place them according to my intended design They are attached only partially to the surface to give the otherwise flat surface texture. The works on glass are different in that each panel contains separate drawings. A series of them, mounted in standing fashion with the support of hardware turns them into sculptural pieces. They are called Open Books (see invitational image). Carla Lombardi describes her work as follows: My work explores personal views on a variety of subjects: from childhood, relationships with family and friends and media culture. I use symbols to invite, ask, and tempt the viewer to recognize and share with me the stories present in my work. I make work to express myself that pleases me and I hope the viewer. I like to entertain. My Temples of Entertainment, for example, are a combination of Commedia Dell'Arte and movie theaters. In Commedia, the action is live. The two small whistles figures are proportionally scaled to the size of the space they occupy. In the movie theater parts, the images are two dimensional and shift in scale from poster size to cinemascope on top and inside to smaller scale on doors, sides, and back of the Temple. The free standing sculptures and plaques are studies for a cast of characters (see invitational image). In my Fable Series of glazed tiles, I place images of classical nudes into contemporary urban environment. This creates a What If effect that interests and entertains me. www.davinciartalliance.org www.rutenbergart.com www.carlalombardi.com Venue: DaVinci Art Alliance
