April 10 Fishing Report: The sun is out, and so are the fish

What an awesome week of fishing as the spring run of fish has arrived. Pier and surf fishermen reported catches of bluefish, croakers, Virginia mullet, black drum, red drum and small flounder. Bottom fishermen are reporting catches of grouper, snapper, black bass and amberjack. Gulf Stream fishing continues to improve with catches of tuna, dolphin and plenty of wahoo over 50 pounds being caught.


TOPSAIL ISLAND

Robert Miller reports that flounder, red drum and bluefish are being caught on the sound side. Pier fishing is producing catches of sea mullet, black drum, croakers and bluefish. Surf fishing is producing catches of croakers, black drum and sea mullet. Red snapper, gag grouper, red grouper and black bass are being caught in the 30- to 45-mile range. WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH

Tex Grissom reports that inshore and pier fishing is producing catches of bluefish, sea mullet, red drum and black drum. False Albacore are being caught in the 10- to 20-mile range. Sea bass are being caught in the 20- to 35-mile range while red and gag grouper are being caught from 30 miles out to the break. Gulf Stream fishing is producing catches of wahoo, blackfin tuna, king mackerel, grouper and dolphin. Some yellowfin tuna are being caught in the waters to the north and to the south. CAROLINA/KURE BEACH

Capt. Dennis Barbour reports that black drum and small speckled trout are being caught in the river and in the creeks. Surf fishing is producing catches of black drum, Virginia mullet, bluefish and a few small flounder. Lots of king mackerel are being caught in the vicinity of Frying Pan Tower. Gulf Stream fishing is producing catches of dolphin, blackfin tuna and wahoo with two wahoo over 50 pounds being caught. Source: Island Tackle and Hardware.

OFFSHORE WILMINGTON

Stuart Smith reports that Gulf Stream fishing is producing catches of blackfin tuna, dolphin and wahoo. Plenty of king mackerel are being caught around Frying Pan Tower. Bottom fishermen using jigs just inside the break are reporting nice catches of grouper in the 30- to 40-pound range. Chris Branco and crew had a great day bottom fishing Sunday and caught 16 grouper, six king mackerel, black bass and triggerfish. Source: Intracoastal Angler.

LOWER BRUNSWICK COUNTY

Capt. Chris Burrows reports that inshore fishing is producing catches of speckled trout, black drum and red drum. Black bass are being caught in 50 to 85 feet of water on Shimano Lucanus jigs and cut bait. King mackerel are being caught at Frying Pan Tower out to 120 feet of water. Gulf Stream fishing is producing catches of wahoo, dolphin and blackfin tuna. Dr. Kendall Suh caught two citation wahoo Saturday that weighed 70.6 pounds and 41.4 pounds. NE CAPE FEAR RIVER AT CASTLE HAYNE

Jamie Smith reports that bream are being caught on crickets, red worms and beetle spins. Crappie are being caught on small minnows and red worms. Catfish are being caught on chicken livers, cut up eels, night crawlers and large minnows. Source: County Line Bait and Tackle.
